This is Betty. Last night she was caught in the Barbed Wire fence on my property :-(. After cutting the fence she was given a slight anesthetic to relieve her pain and put her in a doze. Then Jo and I removed the wire from her wing webbing and fourth finger.

Unfortunately her finger died but with some slight bruising now her wing should heal well.

Betty is doing very well and having a sleep with other recovering bats in care. She will be spoilt rotten till she is well enough to be released back into the wild.

Don’t believe people when they say bats are full of disease. It’s bullshit! Birds carry more disease than bats. Protect these beautiful creatures.

Betty is a sweet, cuddly little girl with not a mean bone in her body. Give bats a chance!

Chernobyl’s Wildlife

When Mary Mycio tells people she visited the radioactive fallout zone around Chernobyl to study the region’s animals, the questions are always the same. Do the animals have two heads? Do they glow?

MAN DESTROYS THE PLANET AND EVERYTHING ON IT!

Interesting animated video of mans inhumanity and stupidness. Leads to a conclusion that is sad but not unlikely…. “The De-evolution of man”

The Worst Plastic Pellet Spill On Earth: Hong Kong

What is a nurdle? A pre-production pellet. If you’re going to make a Coke bottle, you order nurdles, add a bunch of nasty plasticizers— chemical additives that give a plastic product its performance characteristics— like flexible or rigid, etc. Nurdles are a little bit bigger than a BB and like transporting a handful of BBs, they tend to spill.

A month ago, I was at sea with Hong Kong dwelling, Australian activist, Tracey Read. She showed the crew her local beach which she has made her mission in life to clean. This beach in Hong Kong is amongst the most plastic polluted of any we’ve ever seen. So much plastic washes up here one can hardly see the sand, and even after a thorough beach cleanup, it’s entirely polluted again within a couple of weeks.

The din over shark fin

CHINA says it will ban shark fin soup from official banquets in three years, and despite the vast popularity of the dish, there are signs that a growing number of people are turning down the delicacy symbolizing prestige and generosity. Dong Zhen reports. The image of bloodied, dying sharks with sawed-off fins and the realization that the shark population is plummeting have mobilized people to save the sharks and remove status-symbol shark fin soup from Chinese menus.A no-shark-fin campaign is growing across China, the world’s major consumer of the fins. Celebrities and business people are calling on the Chinese to forego the delicacies. They include former NBA star Yao Ming, filmmaker Ang Lee and 300 business tycoons, including Jack Ma, owner of Alibaba.com and Taobao.com, and Wang Shi, who owns Vanke, one of the largest real estate groups in China.“When the buying stops, the killing can too,” Yao says in a widely seen video.
