HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE YOU SEEN INTENTIONALLY HIT AN ANIMAL ON THE ROAD?

The Science Of Roadkill

Mark Rober placed some rubber animals on the side of the road to see who would swerve out of their way to kill it:

He found out that 94 percent of drivers did what anyone in their sane mind would do: keep driving on their lane. Remember that the animals were on the road’s shoulder, way outside their driving path. They didn’t pose any danger whatsoever to the drivers’ safety. On the other hand, six percent went out of the driving lane to run over the animals. Think about that: sixty out of one thousand drivers actually went out of their way to kill a living thing that didn’t represent any danger to their lives—and risking their own lives in the process, no less. Six percent were just cruel because they could be.

FUCKING SCUM POACHERS
- 6 Chinese charged for turtle catch in Philippines :-((((

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A court in the Philippines charged six Chinese fisherman with poaching endangered sea turtles in proceedings Monday aimed at protecting threatened wildlife along the country’s coastline.

Nine of the turtles were already dead, but three were released alive into the waters after being tagged, Glenda Cadigal, a wildlife specialist at the Palawan Council, told The Associated Press.

The sea turtles, also known as Chelonia mydas, are often caught for food and for use in traditional medicine. They can grow as long as 5 feet (150 centimeters) and weigh as much as 290 pounds (130 kilograms). They are endangered because of overharvesting of both eggs and adults.

10 Amazing Volunteer Vacations Where You Can Help Animals

Not sure where to go for your next vacation? Why not combine a visit to an exotic locale with helping needy animals? There are plenty of great volunteer programs throughout the world to help feed, protect or provide medical care to animals or to assist with scientific projects related to tracking migration patterns or counting diminishing populations.

Here is just 2 of them :-)

1. Conserve Shark Populations in Belize

The Earthwatch Institute offers dozens of fascinating expeditions that not only provide volunteers with a once in a lifetime travel experience, but also allow them to participate in ongoing long-term projects that have significant positive impact on the planet’s endangered animal life. In the Shark Conservation project, volunteers work side by side with scientists on research boats counting sharks, catching and tagging various shark species and positioning underwater cameras to get a better look at shark life. On land, volunteers gather information about local and tourist attitudes toward shark fishing.

2. Preserve Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Areas in Greece

Global Vision International, an organization dedicated to supporting international charities through volunteer programs, internships and raising funds, sponsors numerous opportunities for travelers to help stop the decimation of endangered animals. The Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program, located in the turtle nesting area of Lakonikos Bay in the Mediterranean Sea, asks volunteers to record the nesting activity of loggerhead turtles, protect the turtles’ nests and provide information on the importance of maintaining the turtle population to both locals and visiting tourists. The project is located near the charming fishing town of Gythio, in the southern Peloponnese.

Hundreds of tortoises seized at Thai airport

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have found nearly 400 protected tortoises in unclaimed bags at an airport in Bangkok, according to an official. The Indian and Burmese Star tortoises had been in luggage for about 10 days by the time they were found late Friday at Suvarnabhumi airport, said a senior customs official, who declined to be named. Loading tags suggested they had originally come from Dhaka in Bangladesh, according to the Freeland Foundation, a counter-trafficking organisation, before going to Japan via Bangkok and returning to the Thai capital when they were not collected. The foundation estimated the tortoises could fetch up to $31,000 on the black market. Out of 370 found, four had died during the journey, it said.

This film was made to highlight the trade of sea turtles in Trinidad & Tobago, which is legal during hunting season, under the colonial era Fisheries Act of 1916. During the closed season the practice is widespread due to a lack of law enforcement. These endangered turtles are in danger disappearing from our waters unless we act now, and pressure out government to enact legislative change. This video was filmed from October 12-14 2010 along the East and North-East Coasts of Trinidad.
